I grew up in the cities and moved around a bit, learning a lot about how to run a business. I didn’t have the opportunity or the means to go to college growing up, so I had to work from the bottom up, which usually landed me in a management position. As I kept growing, I started to take certification courses and independent courses that helped me build my own business and learn different trades along the way. Even though some of the courses I took don’t pertain to the career path I am on, I believe it was worth it. Educating oneself, I believe, is one of the most important things you can do to grow as an individual. I continue to run my own business, Carroll’s Cleaning, though it’s lucrative. I felt I wanted to serve a purpose, being a part of the bigger picture. I grew up with a rougher start, and school wasn’t the greatest experience for me. I had been bullied a bit and with moving around, not only did the faces change but the style of teaching did as well. So it was difficult to retain information, and it was even more difficult to admit that I needed help.
The first time I walked into Kalon, I was working as an Operations Manager for another company. I was taken aback by how warm and welcoming the atmosphere was, and when I learned more about the Academy, I said, “I wish we had this growing up!” I feel if I had the opportunity to be a part of a school such as Kalon, I would have thrived. I believe everything happens for a reason; I was meant to learn from my circumstances to help others who have shared the same struggles. To say, “you’re not alone in this crazy world, and there is a brighter side.” To be an ally for those who are afraid to speak up and ask for help. And help guide when someone is feeling lost. I feel that is my purpose. I have worn many hats in this life and walked many paths that led me exactly where I need to be today.
